Assemble Teacher I Job Responsibilities:
Assemble Teachers are responsible for planning and delivering engaging, STEAM-based programs in-person as well as virtually. They actively engage to build a culture of making and inquiry. They work with and report back to the In-House Programs Manager on Assemble’s current program offerings, to explore new program opportunities, and to help expand the organization's capacity to fulfill its mission and vision. This person will teach throughout the week with some potential weekend hours. This person will be a lead teacher as well as collaborate with Assemble coordinators and teachers to deliver programming and lessons. They are responsible for delivering programs based on Assemble’s themes as well as remixing and creating new ones based on contemporary topics in STEAM to build a culture of making and inquiry. All staff members are expected to help expand the organization’s capacity to fulfill its mission and vision. They also are expected to work collaboratively with all staff as needed.
Reporting Structure:
The Assemble Teacher 1 reports to and is evaluated by In-House Programs Managers (IHPM).
Defined terms:
Afterschool - Week-long programs that run Tuesday through Thursday, 3 pm - 6 pm during the school year, typically between Labor Day and Memorial Day. Serves youth grades 1st - 9th
Girls MakerNight - Monday Afterschool geared towards youth who identify as girls, non-binary, or trans youth
Field Trips - 2 to 3 hour programs scheduled according to host schools/groups. Tend to be custom programs to fit the needs of the school/group visiting
Day Camps - Day Long Programs that run from 9am - 4pm on days that students do not have school over the school year. Assemble follows the Pittsburgh Public School Calendar
Summer Camps - Week-long programs that run Monday through Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, throughout the summer, typically 9 weeks from mid-June to mid-August
Pre and Post Camp - Extra care time provided to parents to drop off their students at 8 am for Pre camp and pick up by 5 pm for Post camp. This is offered for both day and summer camps.
Birthday Parties- 2 hours on Sundays, in-person programs towards birthdays for youth ages 4-14. These involve at least 2 making projects based on a STEAM theme
Co-Teaching: Lead youth programs in tandem with the teaching team. Adjusts lessons to fit the needs of the immediate programs and fulfills duties listed below.
Job Duties and Expectations:
- 75% - Teaching and Program Delivery
- Facilitates the delivery of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) activities, and lesson plans during regularly-scheduled program workshops and camps
- Remains aware of program timeline and adheres to the established timeline
- Writes and/or adapts workshop curriculum using existing best practices in STEAM and Maker education
- Updates curriculum in Google Drive as needed
- Attend and participate in teaching team meetings and ensure ongoing collaboration with the teaching team, clearly communicating any needs and issues at hand with the program managers
- Coordinates with the In-House Program Manager regarding the use of available materials at Assemble and digitally submits material requests in advance of specified program workshops or camps
- Fills out and submits weekly workshop debrief form with the teaching team to reflect on and improve the program
- Manages classroom behavior while promoting a positive and welcoming learning environment
- Maintains a clean environment and performs any necessary setup and cleanup related to the program
- Adapts to unplanned events or unexpected changes quickly and professionally
- Attends all mandatory training, professional development (PD) sessions, and all-staff meetings
- Maintains professional interaction with co-workers, makers, students, on-site contacts, parents, and other points of contact necessary to conduct programs
- Observe and participate in any social distancing, cleaning, and disinfecting protocol set by Assemble’s Health & Safety Reopening Policy or partners
- 20% - Program Documentation and Student Info Collection
- Collects and distributes any necessary permission forms and contact information required for program participants and immediately informs the In-House Program Manager of any changes
- Records and reports student attendance
- Ensures that all evaluation forms are administered to individual students at each workshop or camp, including photo documentation and other qualitative data
- Documents programs through photography and filing the photos in the drive
- 5% – Advance Assemble’s vision, mission, and values
- Represent Assemble at events and presentations
- Model behaviors that continue to build Assemble culture
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of Assemble and our programs
- Attend board meetings, fundraisers, and events as requested by the Manager or Executive Director
- Perform other duties as required and assigned

- Competent with Email, Google Drive, and Google Documents
- Excellent and effective written, verbal, and nonverbal communication skills.
- Attentive to detail as to uphold the quality and goals set for Assemble’s programs
- Ability to communicate with a range of people from children, teens, parents, peer Assemble Teachers, Assemble managers, and other provider liaisons
- Effective mediation skills and ability to work through conflict
- Commitment to anti-oppression work
- Attentive to culturally relevant pedagogy and restorative justice methods
- Must have a valid driver’s license, State ID, or Passport
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must be able to adapt to flexible work hours and the environment with evolving program priorities
- Must have current clearances for PA Child Abuse, PA Criminal Record, FBI PA Department of Education Clearance, and Mandated Reporter Certificate by the time of employment
Education/ Experience:
- Teaching either in school or out-of-school spaces or professional work experience is required.
- Experience in a nonprofit organization preferred
- Bachelor’s degree preferred and or equivalent work experience in an out-of-school or educational setting
- Experience with STEAM or Maker Education preferred, both low and high-tech
- Background and comfort working with youth of diverse identities and experiences
- Lesson plan and curriculum writing experience preferred
- Working knowledge and interest in youth-oriented computer programming language (e.g. scratch, Minecraft, etc.), robotics, VR, AR, AI, microcontrollers (Makey Makey), rapid prototype methods like the laser cutter and 3d printers, in a learning environment, is preferred
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee should be able to:
- Perform light work - exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time, with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds for materials.
- Ability to see, hear, talk, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and visual acuity; sit, stand, walk, and other similar tasks requiring physical activity in relation to working with youth.
- Ability to operate standard office/computer equipment.
